Infrastructure progress continues this construction season within Red Deer's only downtown, master-planned, riverside community. We intend to wrap up construction on several major projects in 2020; here's what's happening:

Alexander Way
Alexander Way is a key gateway for Capstone. Road construction was completed in 2019, including flex parking lanes, street planters, sidewalks, bike paths, and landscaping. In 2020, our work will focus on the addition of new street signs, lighting and furniture. Alexander Way will remain open during construction, although minor detours may occur over the season.

Canada 150 Square
Located along the Riverwalk promenade, Canada 150 Square is imagined as a focal point and key programming space of the community. This spring and summer, work on Canada 150 Square includes the installation of decorative concrete, lighting, planters, furniture and a fountain. This work is primarily off-street and won't have a significant impact on vehicular traffic within the area.

Parking Lot
A new parking lot was constructed in 2019 at the northwest end of Alexander Way near to Riverwalk promenade. This years parking curbs, lighting and landscaping will compete the space. Beyond adding over 60 parking stalls to the area, the parking lot provides alternate access for local businesses during periods of high construction pressure and when minor detours are required on Alexander Way.

South and North Riverwalk
A key recreational feature of Capstone, Riverwalk promenade, is designed to take advantage of the community's natural edge - the Red Deer River. Most of the hardscaped (paved) trail was completed in 2019. In 2020, work will continue on a short section on trail through Canada 150 Square with tree planting. A natural soft-scaped park space will also added at the south end of Riverwalk near 45 Street. Although there won't be any impact to vehicular traffic on 45th Street as a result of this work, there may be temporary trail closures for pedestrians and appropriate detours will be identified. In unpaved areas, or in areas of heavy foot traffic (area in front of the Red Roof Building at Purearth Organics and DOSE Coffee), crews will lay down gravel while the ground continues to dry up to ensure pedestrian access to North and South Riverwalk is maintained.

To ensure safety during this construction season, our general contractor - Pidherney's - has adopted a Pandemic Prevention Plan. This plan ensures a strict adherence of safety measures and protocols related to the current COVID-19 crisis such as: ongoing health monitoring, physical distancing, proper hand washing/hygiene and additional cleaning and disinfecting procedures to prevent the transmission of the virus.
